Once you have your spores, the next step is to prepare the substrate. The substrate is essentially the food that your mushrooms will grow on. For B+ mushrooms, a mixture of brown rice flour and vermiculite works well because it’s easy to prepare and provides the necessary nutrients for the mushrooms to flourish. This substrate needs to be sterilized to prevent any unwanted bacteria or mold from growing. Sterilization can typically be achieved by steaming or cooking the substrate in a pressure cooker.

After preparing and cooling the substrate, it’s time to introduce the B+ spores. This process is known as inoculation. Using sterile techniques, inject the spores into the jars containing your substrate. The key here is to maintain as sterile an environment as possible to prevent contamination. After inoculation, the jars should be stored in a dark place at a stable temperature to encourage colonization of the substrate by the mushroom mycelium.

The wait for mycelium to colonize the substrate can test your patience, but it’s crucial for successful mushroom growth. This phase typically takes several weeks. During this time, you should see a white, thread-like network spreading throughout the substrate. Once the jars are fully colonized, they are ready to be introduced to a fruiting environment where they can receive light, humidity, and fresh air to stimulate mushroom production.

Setting up a fruiting chamber can be as simple as using a large plastic tote. Line the bottom of the tote with perlite to maintain humidity, and place your colonized substrate inside. By misting the chamber daily and ensuring it has fresh air, you’ll provide the perfect conditions for mushrooms to start appearing.

Finally, the most rewarding part: harvesting your B+ mushrooms. Harvest before the veils underneath the mushroom caps begin to tear. This timing ensures the best texture and potency for your harvest. With proper care, your mushrooms should be ready to harvest in about a week after they start to appear.
